CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

The student will acquire an understanding of e-business principles and practices in the areas of marketing, operation, supply chain management, customer relationship management, e-law, security, and privacy.

 

PREREQUISITE (S):  Graduate standing

 

COURSE TEXT:  Electronic Commerce—A Managerial Perspective 2006, Turban et al.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

Students will gain competency in this innovative field, and in the techniques used by professionals for a diverse aspects of eCommerce venture.    At the end of the module, students will be able:

 

¨      To successfully integrate the language of this subject into our vocabulary.

¨      To recognize the concerns relating to eCommerce and to develop informed responses and strategies with respect to these issues.

¨      To have an understanding of the technology requirements for a new eBusiness or for an existing business looking to enter eCommerce.

¨      To recognize the limits and constraints, as well as the potential, of current technology as it relates to eCommerce.

¨      To be able to analyze existing eBusinesses or eCommerce projects and recognize their strengths and weaknesses.

¨      To be familiar with the eCommerce history and critical of the predictions of the visions for the future.

¨      To be able to develop a successful business proposal for new and expanding eCommerce projects.

¨      To be familiar with recent changes in legislation surrounding eCommerce.

¨      To be able to develop recommendations for improvement of existing eCommerce products or systems.

¨      To successfully view eCommerce from the eyes of the customer while meeting the needs of the business.

¨      To develop an ethical approach for creating, maintaining and utilizing new and existing eCommerce projects.

 


The topics of this subject will include but are not limited to:

 

¨      Business concept and brand building

¨      eCommerce vs. eBusiness

¨      eCommerce business requirements

¨      eCommerce technology design and implementation

¨      Best practices for building an eBusiness with eCommerce

¨      Analysis of a new or existing eBusiness

¨      Social, legal, and ethics considerations

 

Required Experience:

·        Library research project requiring review of E-Business literature, minimum of nine articles, to improve written communication skills, oral communication skills and to orient the student to IS resources

COURSE STRUCTURE:

This course is a combination of lectures, class discussion, case studies, and outside reading assignments.  Maximum use will be made of the text and contemporary material.  Completion of problem/case assignments is critical to the understanding of the course material.

·        Students are expected to attend all classes

·        If you do not attend class, the burden is on you to be aware of all assignments and tests.

·        You are expected to be in the classroom promptly at or prior to the start of class.  Late arrivals are disruptive to the students and the professor.  Please let me know if you know in advance that you are running late. 

·        Please turn off ALL cellular phones or other devices.  If you have a need for these devices during class time, please speak with the professor prior to class.  DO NOT engage in any conversation in the classroom on a cellular phone unless it is an ABSOLUTE emergency!

Select and summarize six (9) MIS 550-related articles from some area or aspect specifie to E-Commerce.

 

General Comments

§         You must choose a substantive article.

§          The length of each article chosen should be a minimum of 2-3 pages.

§         Avoid articles that discuss the release of new software/hardware.

§         Choose articles that discuss the concept as it applies to an organization’s strategic direction, competitive advantage, innovations or unique business practice.

§         You must utilize at least 3 different publications.

§         Your summaries will be turned in on 3 separate dates during the semester.

o       1st Set – 3 articles and summaries

o       2nd Set – 3 articles and summaries

o       3rd Set – 3 articles and summaries

Written Assignment

§         You are responsible for preparing a one-page summary for each article, one inch margins, double-spaced, 12 point font.  These summaries are to be prepared using a word processing package.

 

§         Your summary should follow the outline below:

o       Title of article, journal title, and date of publication, author(s)

o       Summary of article’s main points as related to your E-Business course knowledge

o       Your opinion of the article’s main points, based on your MIS 550 course knowledge

 

§         Your articles and summaries must be bound in some manner.  Articles and summaries that are not bound will not be accepted

§         You must have a table of contents with tabs separating each article/summary.

§         Include a copy of the article as well as the summary.

§         Place the summary before the article 

§         A professional appearance is important to receive full credit for this project

 

Oral presentation

§         Oral presentations will be presented on two approved articles.

§         PowerPoint presentations or some visual aid is strongly recommended.  If you are not familiar with PPT, please see your instructor

§         Your PPT should be a minimum of three (4) slides

§         This is to be a professional presentation, dress appropriate.

§         Please refer to the Oral Presentation Assessment for specifics.
