Professor
Stitt
is a native North
Carolinian.
He received his BA
in history from
High Point
University.
His MA and PhD degrees
are from the University of South
Carolina. Dr. Stitt joined the High
Point faculty in 1969, and
served as the Chair of the History Department
until 2008. He presently teaches research
methods and senior seminar as well as
courses in Western Civilization,
British history, and Canadian history.
Dr. Stitt
specializes in 20th century British
industrial history with a focus on
labor and management cooperation plus
efforts toward industrial efficiency
in the interwar period. He is the
author of
Joint
Industrial Councils in British
History: Inception, Adoption, and
Utilization, 1917-1939 (Praeger
2006), as well as journal articles and
approximately two-dozen conference
papers, including "Canada's National
Productivity Council: Political
Gimmickry or Anti-Socialist Strategy,"
presented at the April 2008 meeting of
EBHS. He is
Chairman of the Board of the Economic
& Business Historical Society
(EBHS). He formerly served as the
EBHS's president, and under his direction, High Point
University hosted the society's annual
academic conference in 2005.
Beyond his administrative
duties
to the department, Dr. Stitt has
served as
High Point
University's Faculty
NCAA
Athletics Representative since 1980.
He was
elected chair of the Big South
Conference's Faculty Athletics
Representatives in 2001
and reelected
to this position in 2004. He is a member of the NCAA
Division I Academics, Eligibility, and
Certification Commission. He also
serves the university as Faculty Marshall
and sponsor
to the North Carolina Nu
Chapter of the Alpha Chi Academic Honor
Society.
Dr. Stitt serves
his church as a member of the vestry
and belongs to the Asheboro, NC
Rotary, where he is the Paul Harris
Fellow. His
limited free time is devoted to
hobbies that
include sailing and gardening.
