Professor Schneid was born in Brooklyn, New York. He received his BA from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He obtained his MA and PhD from Purdue University where he studied European and Military History under the direction of Gunther E. Rothenberg. Schneid taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Purdue University before coming to High Point University in 1994. He teaches European history 1600-1945 and specializes in the French Revolution and Napoleonic Era as well as general military history. He served as Director of the University Honors Program from 2000-2010. In May 2011 he was appointed Chair of the Department of History.

Dr. Schneid has received several teaching awards while at High Point. In 2009, he was awarded the Ruth E. Ridenhour award for scholarly and professional achievement. In December 2004, he was named the university's recipient of the prestigious Exemplary Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching at a United Methodist Affiliated Institution. The award is bestowed by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. In 2003-2004, the University Honors Society awarded him the Alpha Chi Award for promoting excellence and scholarship in the classroom. In 2002, he received the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from High Point’s Evening Degree Program, which is granted annually by evening students for teaching excellence.

Professor Schneid holds positions in several professional organizations. He is the Southern Regional Director for the Society for Military History and a member of the Board of Directors for the Consortium on Revolutionary Europe, on which he served as chair for the 2003-2004 term. The Consortium is a national organization with international participation that promotes the study of European and trans-Atlantic revolutions between 1750 and 1850. High Point University is a directing institution of the organization. Schneid is a member of the Founding Editorial Board, and contributor to, the Oxford Military History Bibliographies Online. He also serves as a Series Editor for the History of Warfare series published by Brill, LTD.

Professor Schneid coordinates the Gunther E. Rothenberg Seminar in Military History at High Point University. This program brings some of the leading scholars in military history to the university to present their most recent research and engage in lively discussion and debate of the subject matter. Current Projects:

Professor Schneid is currently completing a detailed military history of the Second War of Italian Unification titled, War of the Risorgimento, 1859-1861 for the Ufficio Storico dell Stato Maggiore dell Esercito (Italian Army Historical Office).  The book will be published in 2013 in English and Italian.

He is also completing an edited manuscript, Armies of the French Revolution, for the Campaigns and Commanders Series at Oklahoma University Press.
