History Professor Authors Entries for Encyclopedia on the State
(November 2006). Kathy Carter, Prof. of History, recently contributed
several entries for the Encyclopedia of North Carolina. This
reference work, published in November 2006, took 15 years to complete,
and compiles the work of more than 500 contributors for 2,000
articles. William S. Powell, editor of the Encyclopedia, is the dean
of North Carolina historians. Carter's contributions to the project
reflected her interest in the state's coastal history. She published
entries on the U.S.S. Huron, Commercial Fishing, the HMS Mirlo Rescue,
Shellfish, the Outer Banks, and the U.S. Lifesaving Service.
