Political
Science Professor Administers Annual HPU Freshmen Civic Engagement
Survey (November
2005). For the third year in a row, Dr. Jim
Corey, Asst. Professor of Political Science, surveyed incoming first-year students about their patterns of civic
participation. Over 90 percent of the freshman class completed his
questionnaire during orientation week. Among his most interesting
findings, Dr. Corey reports that over two-thirds of High Point’s
incoming freshmen volunteered for some type of community service in
the 12 months preceding their enrollment at HPU, a rate that is nearly
double that which was reported in Harvard University’s recent
nationwide study of undergraduates. High Point’s students were also
much more likely than the typical college undergraduate to have raised
money for a charity: 70 percent of HPU’s first-year students have
raised funds for a charity versus a national rate of 26 percent.
