Welcome
to the History Department

David
Hayworth Hall, home to History
With a full-time faculty of
nine members,
the department teaches more than fifty different courses. We
offer three majors: History,
North American
Studies, and History with
Teaching Certification in Social Studies. The department sponsors
minors in History, International
Studies, Latin American Studies, and/or North American
Studies. Most of our faculty
members teach one or more classes in the university's Evening
Degree Program, where we
offer the History major and minor.
Since January 2007, the department has offered the Masters of Arts
degree in history.
History Degrees
Prepare Students for
Fulfilling Professional Careers
Our
courses help students to develop the skills that
employers most demand from today's college
graduates: excellence in critical thinking,
analytical writing, and public
speaking. History
majors pursue careers in countless
professions, and our alumni have gone on to become leaders in government
service, law, business, and education. History majors frequently enter directly
into
law or graduate school,
with around 15% of recent graduates currently in graduate or doctoral
programs in a variety of fields.
The department's many
international courses, together with joint
programs in International
Studies and Latin
American Studies, train our graduates to
thrive in a job market driven by global forces and
opportunities.
Members of the faculty have researched
or published in Chinese, French,
German,
Hebrew, Italian,
Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swahili. We
offer courses on Africa, Asia, Canada, Latin
America, the Middle East, Russia, and Western
Europe. Our majors and minors often combine their coursework with study abroad, advanced
language classes, participation in the
university's Model UN program, and senior thesis projects on
international topics.
Our
Students Learn from Experts in and out of
the Classroom
Students in the history
programs work
one-on-one with
active scholars.
Our
faculty members
stay on the cutting edge of their
disciplines by
conducting field research, serving in professional and
academic organizations, and participating in
regional, national, and international
conferences. The department
is home to two academic journals:
Historical
Geography and Selected Papers of the
Consortium on the Revolutionary Era. We host
the
Gunther E. Rothenberg Seminar in Military
History, which each year brings together
leading scholars on a specific military topic. Collectively,
departmental faculty
have authored hundreds of book chapters, journal
articles, book reviews, and professional papers.
We have published numerous books with leading
presses.
