Professor Sam Whitt received his Ph.D. in political science at Vanderbilt University. He holds a B.A. with majors in Russian and German from University of South and a second B.A. in political science from the University of Tennessee. His interests in international relations date back to a fateful decision as a junior in high school when he elected, somewhat impulsively, to spent a semester studying abroad in Russia. During his college years, he returned to Russia on a fellowship to monitor the 1996 Russian Presidential elections. After college, Sam spent two years doing research in the former Yugoslavia on a Watson and Fulbright-IIE Fellowship before deciding to come home, get married and go to graduate school.

Much of his dissertation research and subsequent scholarship has explored ethnic relations after violent conflict using novel experimental methods. His fieldwork in Bosnia- Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Tajikistan has been supported by grants from the Fulbright-Hays Dissertation Fellowship Program, the National Science Foundation, IREX, and Title VIII funding from the State Department. His research has been published in several journals, including the American Journal of Political Science

Prior to coming to High Point University, he spent a year at the State Department in Washington working on public opinion research. He previously taught at the University of Tennessee, Mount Mercy College, and at Kosovo's University of Pristina, where he completed a Fulbright Fellowship in 2010-11.
